GPS within Workspace ONE is mainly meant to help administrators locate lost or stolen devices. Some companies attempt to use it to track employee locations, however it was never built specifically for that purpose.

The device location reported within Workspace ONE is an approximation. It does not work like traditional GPS applications that collect data on a real-time basis

A device by itself doesn't know its location at any given point in time. A device asks for its GPS co-ordinates to learn of its own position. The GPS co-ordinates are provided by the satellite communicating with the device at that moment . Once the device is provided the GPS co-ordinates by the Satellite, it renders this information to the Agent when the agent asks for device specific information. The Device provides this information consistently every 60 minutes( GPS polled set time), as long as this information is provided by the satellite. Upon check-in the Agent hands over the information to the console which stores this information in its database - this information can be accessed through a report (Device Location Log) generated by the console.

Info

The Device Location log can be accessed via Monitor > Reports & Analytics > Reports > List View > Device Location Log

The reporting of the Location Data is a combination of the above two parameters - If the displacement of the device is less than the GPS Distance Poll Delta value, a new location sample will not be generated and reported for the device and the location reported after the GPS Time Poll Interval to AirWatch will be the old location as reported by the previous sample
With AirWatch the GPS option does not work like traditional GPS apps (Real time data collection). Information only updates when the device moves across cell towers or Wi-Fi hotspots. Also, GPS info is only updated when the Agent sends a sample of info (which is not continually). All of this is done only to get an approximate location of the device and not real time tracking. The reason behind this is that the GPS is a very battery intensive operation.
