Summary

You can utilize the Self-Service portal to perform restores of virtual machines or vApps back into vCloud Director. The items are restored back to their original location with vCloud Director. Special care should be taken to ensure there are enough resources to complete the restore.

Restores are able to be completed in the following two ways.

  1. Restore VM by overwriting the original.
    1. With this process the original VM is first deleted from vCloud Director and the backup is then restored in its place.
  2. Restore VM keeping the original.
    1. With this process the backup is restored to it's original location keeping the source virtual machine in place.
      1. This process requires that there is enough storage available on the original storage policy within vCloud Director. If there is not enough storage available the restore task will fail.
      2. If you want both machines powered on at the same time, there needs to be enough free compute (RAM and CPU) resources available within vCloud Director.
        1. If there are not enough compute resources available the restore task will complete. However, you will not be able to power on the virtual machine.
